New Certificate in Faith-based Organization

Intersections Institute Launches New Integrative Program for Theology and Management
3/31/2010

Gettysburg, PA – The Intersections Institute announces a new program of study designed for persons working in faith based organizations, focusing on the integration of both theological and management disciplines.

The Certificate in Leadership of Faith-based Organizations (CLFO) will be offered beginning in the fall of 2010 in cooperation with the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.

The program is newly approved by the Seminary’s Board of Directors and is designed for working professionals and offers leadership development opportunities in focused areas of theology and organizational management. LTSG will welcome its first cohort of students into the CLFO in September.

President Michael Cooper-White commented, “We at LTSG are excited to launch this innovative new program. I am confident that it will equip faith-inspired leaders to serve all of God’s people more effectively.”

The nine-course program was created at the behest of social ministry organizations in Pennsylvania and Maryland whose employees are often challenged to integrate the mechanics of administration with a values-driven approach to their work on social issues. Geared toward social ministry leaders, staff of large congregations and anyone interested in coupling continuing education in theology with social action, the CLFO provides flexible scheduling, online learning opportunities, a cohort group of individuals facing similar challenges and a curriculum that can be tailored to individual’s specific needs. The program is designed to be completed in two years. The certificate will offer courses such as “Theological rationale for social ministry”, “History of faith-based social ministry in America”, “Ethics of organizational leadership”, “Non-profit Accounting”, and “Church in society”.

The CLFO is a program of the Intersections Institute. A partnership of the Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries, social ministry organizations and local schools of business and social work, the Intersections Institute connects management training and graduate theological education in a multidisciplinary portfolio. Designed to enhance nonprofit management skills, deepen theological understandings, and optimize the ability of service-ministry professionals to navigate the crossroads of faith and advocacy, in addition to the CLFO, Intersections offers a Master’s in Public Leadership at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

The Intersections Institute has received funding from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation and Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries.

Applications for the CLFO will be available on the LTSG admissions website: www.ltsg.edu. For more information contact Christy Lohr, Director of the Intersections Institute at director@intersectionsinstitute.org
